What You Need to Tow a Rental Trailer
Most rental problems start before pickup, with a truck that can't tow the trailer or a hitch that doesn't fit. Run through this list before you book.
1. Enough tow rating
Your vehicle's tow rating has to be higher than the weight of the trailer plus everything on it. Don't guess. The numbers are in the owner's manual or the manufacturer's towing guide, and two trucks that look the same can have very different ratings.
Remember what GVWR means: it's the most the trailer can weigh when loaded. Our 16' utility trailer has a 7,000 lb GVWR, the 20' car hauler 10,000 lb, the 24' car hauler 14,000 lb and the 14' dump trailer 16,000 lb. You don't always load to the maximum, but your actual loaded weight is the number that has to fit within your vehicle's rating.
2. The right hitch and ball
| Trailer | Ball size |
|---|---|
| 16' utility | 2" |
| 20' car hauler | 2 5/16" |
| 24' car hauler | 2 5/16" |
| 14' dump | 2 5/16" |
The ball and hitch must both be rated for the load. The rating is usually stamped on them. Need one? A hitch is a $10 add-on.
3. A 7-pin connector
Every Renio trailer needs a 7-pin connector, the flat round plug many trucks have near the hitch. A 4-pin flat connector alone won't work. Look before you book, because this catches a lot of first-time renters.
4. Brake control
Every Renio trailer has trailer brakes. The 16' utility and 20' car hauler have them on one axle. The 24' car hauler and 14' dump trailer have them on all wheels. Your tow vehicle needs a working brake controller to run them. Many trucks with a tow package have one built in. If you're not sure, check your dash or owner's manual, or ask us.
5. License, insurance and age
You'll need a valid driver's license and your own auto insurance, and you have to be 25 or older. You'll verify your license and insurance during booking, so it only takes a few minutes before you head to the lot.
6. A pre-trip check
- Coupler latched and locked on the ball
- Safety chains crossed under the tongue and connected
- Breakaway cable attached
- 7-pin plugged in, with lights and brakes working
- Load secured and balanced
- Ramps and gates stowed
